XRPL adds Mastercard Verifiable Intent to x402 payments

The XRP Ledger added Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent to x402 payments on July 24, 2026, enabling a cryptographic credential to verify authorization, limits and purchase details before settlement.

On July 24, 2026, t54.ai added Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent to x402 payments on the XRP Ledger (XRPL). The integration lets developers attach a cryptographic credential to an x402 transfer that identifies who authorized the payment, the permitted spending limits and the exact purchase to be executed.

When a credential is present, the x402 Facilitator run by t54.ai evaluates it through a pre-settlement risk service and applies Trustline screening before funds move onchain. Standard x402 transfers without a credential continue to settle as before.

t54.ai built the upgrade on infrastructure that has been live since February 2026, when the x402 Facilitator first enabled AI agents to pay for services in XRP and RLUSD without an account, API key or prior relationship between parties.

As of late July 2026 the Facilitator had settled about 1.4 million agentic transactions. The network passed one million agentic payments on July 8, 2026, adding roughly 400,000 transactions in about two weeks.

RLUSD, Ripple’s regulated dollar stablecoin, is one of the settlement assets used in x402 flows alongside XRP. RLUSD holds approval from the New York Department of Financial Services and federal trust bank standing; combining RLUSD with Mastercard’s credentialing provides a compliance-oriented option for machine-to-machine stablecoin settlements.

Mastercard’s Verifiable Intent follows its Agentic Payments framework. The cryptographic proof answers three questions a risk engine needs before trusting an autonomous transaction: who gave permission, under what limits, and for which exact purchase. The proof travels with the x402 payment and is checked before the ledger settles the transfer.

The Linux Foundation launched the x402 Foundation on July 15, 2026 to steward the protocol; Visa, Mastercard and Ripple are among the backers. Mastercard began its Agent Pay for Machines program in June 2026 with more than 30 partners, and Ripple joined that program on June 10.

Academic researchers have identified potential vulnerabilities in the x402 protocol, including issues with authorization binding and replay protection. Developers and industry participants say credentialing layers such as Verifiable Intent are intended to provide stronger provenance and authorization information, but the integration does not remove protocol-level attack vectors described in research.

J. Akinyele, Head of Engineering at RippleX, described the milestone of one million agentic transactions as “an exciting milestone” and added that the industry remains in its early stages.

The Verifiable Intent feature is optional and applies only to x402 payments that include the credential. Its rollout occurs as transaction volumes on the x402 Facilitator increase and as governance and infrastructure for machine-to-machine payments continue to develop on public ledgers.
