Whales Shift $725M in ETH as Inverted Pattern Nears Breakdown
Ethereum whales cut about 340,000 ETH – roughly $725 million – since May 17 as an inverted cup-and-handle pattern completed and price trades near $2,132.
On-chain analytics from Santiment show addresses classified as whales, excluding exchange balances, reduced their Ethereum holdings from 125.36 million ETH on May 17 to 125.02 million ETH by May 21, a decline of about 340,000 ETH valued at roughly $725 million at current prices. ETH was trading near $2,132 on May 22. The price chart has formed an inverted cup-and-handle pattern with the handle support at $2,102.
The pattern first appeared on charts around March 29 and the cup completed near May 18. Technical analysis of the formation projects a measured move of about a 19 percent decline from current levels, which would place a target near $1,697.
If price falls below the $2,102 handle, trading would likely enter a cost-basis cluster between $2,059 and $2,075 identified by Glassnode, where roughly 1.378 million ETH is concentrated. Below $2,059, the next technical stops are identified at $2,017 and $1,896. The projected $1,697 target sits below the February 6 cycle low of $1,744.
On-chain behavior by different holder groups is mixed. Glassnode shows hodler net position change rose from 77,978 ETH on May 16 to 151,890 ETH by May 21, a 95 percent increase over five days, reflecting accumulation by addresses holding coins older than 155 days. At the same time, the Smart Money Index on TradingView remained below zero, indicating that institutional or informed trading patterns have not returned during the recent rebound.
The whale reduction began in mid-May, coinciding with the cup completion phase of the pattern. The timing aligns the withdrawal of large holders with the maturing of the chart formation.
For a bullish shift on the charts, price would need to clear $2,292 to gain momentum, and a daily close above $2,462 would invalidate the inverted cup-and-handle formation. Absent those price moves, the chart lists the downside levels noted above.
