US CPI and PPI Rise; Bitcoin Traders Face Higher Financing Costs

US CPI rose 0.4% in August (3.4% y/y) and PPI rose 0.4% (5.4% y/y), increasing the chance the Fed keeps rates high and raising financing costs for leveraged Bitcoin traders.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported consumer prices rose 0.4% in August from July and 3.4% year over year. The producer price index showed a 0.4% monthly increase and a 5.4% annual gain for final demand. Policymakers will consider the data ahead of the Federal Reserve’s Sept. 15–16 meeting.

Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.3% in August after a 0.2% gain in July. The annual core rate eased to 2.4% from 2.5% a year earlier. In the producer report, energy costs increased 4.2% for the month while services prices rose 0.1%. The PPI measure excluding food, energy and trade services slowed to 0.3% from 0.4%.

Gasoline prices climbed 3.9% in August and accounted for more than one-third of the monthly rise in the CPI. Shelter costs rose 0.3% for the month. Energy alone represented more than three-quarters of the increase in final-demand goods prices in the producer report.

PPI covers sales by domestic producers, including goods sold for business investment and exports, while CPI measures prices paid by households for consumption. A rise in producer costs does not automatically produce an equivalent change in consumer prices because firms’ ability to pass on costs depends on contracts, competition and demand.

Markets moved to price in a prolonged period of higher borrowing costs after the reports. Higher short-term interest rates and elevated Treasury yields increase returns on cash and fixed-income instruments, which can reduce demand for non-yielding assets. For traders who borrow to finance Bitcoin positions, higher financing rates raise the cost of leverage and can reduce net returns.

Matt Weller of StoneX warned that a 0.3% monthly core reading could support a rate increase, reflecting how monthly data can influence policy views even when annual measures are moderating. Fed officials will weigh CPI and PPI alongside personal consumption expenditures inflation, employment figures and other indicators when assessing policy.

Annual CPI comparisons can show lower year-over-year readings even when the most recent monthly pace accelerates, because the year-over-year figure reflects changes over a longer period and can be affected by the base from a year earlier.

The inflation readings add to the set of factors investors and traders consider, including financing costs, Treasury yields and expectations for future policy. Bitcoin’s long-term appeal to some investors as a hedge against purchasing-power loss exists alongside short-term sensitivity of holdings to interest rates and borrowing costs.
