Robinhood Adds $25 Million in Bitcoin to Balance Sheet

Robinhood will add $25 million in Bitcoin to its balance sheet, giving the brokerage direct exposure after executives debated the use of company funds.

Robinhood will add $25 million in Bitcoin to its balance sheet, the brokerage announced Wednesday. Johann Kerbrat, the company’s senior vice president and general manager of crypto and international, described the allocation as part of its asset-diversification strategy.

The allocation gives Robinhood direct exposure to Bitcoin after executives debated whether corporate crypto holdings would benefit shareholders. Until now, the company’s crypto strategy had focused on customer trading, infrastructure and services such as tokenization, staking and institutional trading.

Robinhood reported $5.362 billion in cash and cash equivalents as of June 30, 2026, along with $155 million in stablecoins. The Bitcoin allocation is less than 0.5% of the reported cash balance.

Robinhood has not disclosed whether the allocation is a one-time purchase or the start of a recurring Bitcoin treasury program. Strategy has built a larger Bitcoin position by regularly raising capital to buy the cryptocurrency.

The allocation follows a debate among Robinhood executives in late 2025 about whether holding Bitcoin would improve capital allocation for shareholders. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, finance executive Shiv Verma described discussions about creating a corporate crypto treasury.

Verma cited several factors in the debate. Holding Bitcoin could strengthen Robinhood’s connection to the crypto community, while shareholders could already buy the asset through the company’s platform. Management also considered whether company funds would be better used for engineering, products and other growth initiatives. According to Verma, management was “still thinking about it” at the time.

Robinhood acquired Bitstamp for about $224 million in June 2025. The acquisition added a crypto exchange serving retail and institutional customers in several international markets and expanded Robinhood’s infrastructure outside the U.S.

The company has since expanded crypto trading and related services in international markets. It has also developed tokenized-equity products and blockchain infrastructure, including its Robinhood Chain initiative.

Customers traded about $40 billion in crypto through Robinhood and Bitstamp during the second quarter. Robinhood’s app accounted for $18 billion of that volume, while Bitstamp accounted for $22 billion.

Cryptocurrency transaction revenue totaled $100 million in the second quarter, down 38% from a year earlier. Crypto accounted for 8% of Robinhood’s total net revenue, compared with 16% a year earlier.
