Ripple shifts university outreach to XRP stadium branding
Ripple has moved its university campaign from academic programs to sports branding, placing XRP on Kansas jerseys, Florida’s football field and Louisville’s basketball court.
Ripple has shifted its university campaign from academic programs to visible sports branding, signing multiyear deals that place XRP logos on Kansas basketball uniforms, the University of Florida’s football field and on the basketball court at the University of Louisville. Louisville Athletics confirmed the latest partnership on Monday, extending a sequence of three college-sports agreements made in roughly 10 weeks.
The company launched the University Blockchain Research Initiative (UBRI) in 2018 to fund blockchain research, curriculum development and technical projects. Ripple reports UBRI now includes more than 60 universities in 27 countries and that it has supported over 800 new or expanded fintech courses and about 1,500 academic blockchain research projects. Kansas joined UBRI in 2019 after Ripple committed $2 million payable over five years; work at Kansas has included an XRP Ledger validator and research in cybersecurity, biodiversity and the arts.
Kansas and Florida deals preceded the Louisville agreement. The Kansas multiyear sponsorship announced in July added XRP patches to team uniforms; the university described the deal as the first integration of a cryptocurrency onto the jerseys of a major college athletics program. Florida’s multiyear agreement, disclosed on Sept. 4, placed XRP branding on the playing surface at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, on digital properties and on event signage, and includes support for financial and technology education for student-athletes and the wider campus community.
Financial terms have not been fully disclosed. Reports indicate the Kansas deal runs five years and put the Florida partnership at roughly $5 million a year; neither Ripple nor the schools released exact terms. Louisville’s agreement adds court-level branding and extends Ripple’s collegiate presence into another basketball market.
The sponsorships announced to date are primarily branding and distribution arrangements. The Florida announcement did not require the university to hold XRP, accept the token for tickets or merchandise, or settle athletic-department payments on the XRP Ledger.
XRP’s market price moved during the period of these sponsorships. The token traded near $1.09 on July 8, declined below $1 in mid-August, and rallied in late August with an intraday high near $1.695. As of Monday, XRP traded around $1.41, roughly 30% higher than at the time of the Kansas announcement and below a 52-week peak near $3.14.
Ripple’s university work now combines academic funding through UBRI with consumer-facing sports branding. Future university contracts that include ticketing, donations or other on-chain transactions would alter those agreements from brand exposure toward functional on-chain use.
