Rehearse AI agent USDC payments with mainnet dry-run
Operators should inspect the x402 challenge, run circle services pay –estimate, verify Circle policies and allowlists under human OTP, then make one tiny mainnet USDC payment and reconcile.
Operators and developers launching AI agents that will spend USDC are advised to rehearse the actual payment path on mainnet before raising a prepaid budget. The rehearsal sequence requires an inspect call, a dry-run estimate, policy and allowlist checks under human control, one small live payment and a full reconciliation record.
Begin with an inspect request to the exact URL the agent will call. The inspect response must include an accepts[] array listing the payment scheme, chain, payee address, maximum amount and the HTTP method the service expects. If inspect returns no 402 challenge, there is no pay-for-service path to test and teams should not proceed. Match the HTTP method from inspect when you send a payment; a default GET against a POST resource can produce a 405 even if the transfer completed.
Next run a dry-run using circle services pay –estimate with the same -X and payload you will use live. The estimate step verifies the CLI session, the agent address and the chosen chain can satisfy the 402 challenge without broadcasting funds. Optionally set –max-amount during the estimate to confirm the ceiling you will enforce in production; a quoted amount above that ceiling should be logged as a refusal rather than overridden.
Confirm Circle spending policies and recipient allowlists on mainnet before any live payment. Use circle wallet limit and circle wallet limit budget to verify per-transaction caps and remaining rolling budgets. Ensure the pay-to address from inspect appears exactly on the allowlist. Any change to limits or allowlists requires a second email OTP; that OTP should be accessible only to the human principal and not to the agent.
Only after inspect, estimate and policy checks pass should teams send a single tiny mainnet payment they can afford to lose. Most x402 services settle against a Circle Gateway balance rather than a raw wallet token balance. Check circle gateway balance and deposit if needed. The CLI minimum Gateway deposit is 0.5 USDC; deposit that amount only to fund the gateway, and still set the live pay –max-amount to a much smaller ticket. Keep live –max-amount at or below the inspect quoted max; a live payment that spends more than the estimate is a failed rehearsal even if the service returns HTTP 200.
Reconcile the first live payment before raising any prepaid budget. Record the payment hash or transfer ID, the amount, the chain, the payee from inspect, the HTTP method, the remaining Gateway balance and the remaining policy budget in a single log entry. Use the same fields and format planned for production. Verify the Gateway balance drop and the policy budget reduction match the amount inspect quoted; if those numbers disagree, do not increase the agent’s prepaid budget.
Some failures still provide useful information and must be logged the same way as a successful settlement. A policy refusal documents the active spending envelope. A 405 after a transfer indicates a method mismatch and should prompt a repeat of inspect and estimate with the correct -X. An estimate that does not match inspect on network, asset or max amount is a stop condition.
Do not treat testnet faucet payments or estimates as proof of mainnet policy or allowlist controls. Testnet demonstrates CLI mechanics only. Do not scale an agent’s prepaid USDC budget until the tiny live payment has settled and reconciled into the production log and the human OTP remains separate from the agent.
