PayPay accepts Binance Pay for overseas visitors in Japan

PayPay added Binance Pay at participating Japanese stores on Sept. 30, letting verified overseas visitors pay with crypto while merchants receive proceeds in yen.

PayPay began accepting Binance Pay at participating offline stores in Japan on Sept. 30. Eligible overseas visitors can use funds from their Binance accounts to pay in yen, and merchants receive sales proceeds in Japanese yen. The linkage runs through the HIVEX cross-border payment network and requires Binance identity verification for visiting users.

Payments are handled inside the Binance app. Visitors can present a PayPay payment code generated in the Binance app for a merchant to scan or scan a participating merchant’s PayPay QR code. In both cases the purchase is settled using the customer’s crypto balance and converted to yen at checkout. Binance’s materials say users can review the exchange rate before confirming a payment.

The service supports more than 100 cryptocurrencies, including USDT, USDC, Bitcoin, Ethereum and BNB. Merchants receive yen rather than cryptocurrency; HIVEX handles the currency conversion and settlement between Binance and PayPay.

Refunds are processed as separate transactions, so returned amounts may differ from the original charge because of exchange-rate changes and any applicable foreign-exchange spreads. Binance’s documentation does not specify a numerical spread or a fixed conversion fee.

The service is restricted to non-resident visitors and excludes residents of Japan and Binance Japan users. Merchant participation requires support for PayPay’s cross-border payment capability; stores that do not support cross-border transactions will not accept Binance-funded payments even if they display PayPay signage.

Binance’s guidance lists excluded merchant categories such as online platforms, certain taxis and vending machines, PayPay Money-only stores, some barcode-payment merchants and shops that require Japanese identification for transactions. The feature applies only to in-person checkouts at participating stores and does not extend to domestic Binance customers.
