Paolo Ardoino: coder to Tether CEO after $13B 2024

Paolo Ardoino, a former military cryptography engineer and longtime Bitfinex developer, became Tether CEO in December 2023 and led the company to over $13 billion net income in 2024.

Paolo Ardoino studied computer science at the University of Genoa and worked as a freelance consultant from 2003 on security, high-availability networks and applied cryptography. He worked on military research into self-recovering networks before joining Bitfinex in October 2014 as a senior developer to rebuild the exchange’s trading engine. He became Bitfinex chief technology officer around 2016, added the CTO role at Tether in 2017, and was announced as Tether CEO in October 2023, formally taking the role in December 2023 while retaining technology and strategy positions at related businesses.

Tether reported net income of more than $13 billion for 2024 and reported $1.04 billion in net profit for the first quarter of 2026. As of Q1 2026 the company reported about $8.23 billion in excess reserves above USDT liabilities and said USDT continues to add tens of millions of new wallets each quarter. The company operates with roughly 200 employees and separates its proprietary investment portfolio from the reserves that back USDT.

Tether’s corporate portfolio includes stakes in more than 120 companies. In December 2024 Tether paid $775 million for a stake in Rumble that has risen toward roughly 48 percent ownership. The firm has held positions in Nasdaq-listed miner Bitdeer and disclosed investments in the Italian football club Juventus, agriculture firm Adecoagro, payments firm XREX and German compute company Northern Data. In late 2025 the company entered talks about a stake worth more than $1 billion in humanoid robotics firm Neura Robotics.

Ardoino has overseen expansion beyond stablecoins into direct infrastructure and product development. Tether has invested in renewable energy and Bitcoin mining operations in Uruguay, and Ardoino has stated an ambition for the firm to become the largest Bitcoin miner by capacity. Tether’s gold-backed token XAUT has grown alongside gold prices, and the company is developing a wallet development kit called WDK. Tether Data is building QVAC, a platform focused on on-device artificial intelligence and synthetic datasets; Ardoino described a forthcoming outcome from the AI division as a ‘true breakthrough’ in March 2026.

Regulatory and disclosure matters have affected the company. In 2021 Tether paid $41 million to settle Commodity Futures Trading Commission charges that it made misleading statements about its reserves between 2016 and 2019. S&P Global Ratings downgraded Tether’s stability rating in November 2025 over disclosure gaps. In March 2026 Tether hired KPMG to conduct its first full independent audit, with PwC engaged to prepare internal systems ahead of that review.

After the GENIUS Act became law in mid-2025 Ardoino attended the White House signing. In January 2026 Tether launched USAT, a dollar-backed token issued through Anchorage Digital Bank and custodied by Cantor Fitzgerald. Former White House Crypto Council director Bo Hines leads the USAT business. Tether has positioned USAT for large-scale U.S. adoption while USDT continues to operate globally and pursue a compliance path under the federal framework ahead of a 2028 deadline.

Ardoino has characterized Tether as ‘a company that was born with Bitcoin.’ The KPMG audit remains pending. Tether continues U.S. product development through USAT and related infrastructure projects while maintaining its global USDT business.
