Ontology pauses mainnet after potential security concern

Ontology paused mainnet block production on Aug. 31 to probe a possible security concern and halted on-chain transactions; a public node showed no new blocks after 20,770,893 for about five hours.

Ontology paused mainnet block production on Aug. 31 and suspended on-chain transactions while its technical team and validators reviewed a potential security concern. The project announced the suspension at 09:09 UTC and described the action as a preventive measure.

Ontology reported the issue was identified during a routine daily security check. Validators and the project’s technical staff began a review of the network state and declined to process on-chain transactions while block production remained suspended. The team did not provide a timetable for restarting the network and said it would issue an update before or when production resumed.

In its initial assessment the project reported no confirmed exploit, active attack, loss of funds or compromise. Ontology indicated that ONT and ONG tokens and other on-chain assets were unaffected based on the review available at that time.

A height request to the documented public mainnet node dappnode1.ont.io returned block 20,770,893 at 13:30:49 UTC. The record for that block carries a timestamp of 08:24:26 UTC on Aug. 31, a gap of five hours, six minutes and 23 seconds between the block timestamp and the later snapshot. The unchanged block height visible through the public node aligns with the project’s notice that production had been suspended.

Validators will determine when to resume block production; a confirmed restart will establish the final duration of the outage. The project indicated it would publish a separate announcement with findings from its review.

Market data at the time showed ONT trading near $0.05, with a market capitalization of about $52 million and a circulating supply of 1 billion tokens.
