On-chain Data: Spot ETFs Hold 1.3M BTC as Cycle Signals Muted

Glassnode data through May 14, 2026, shows Bitcoin’s MVRV Z‑Score and exchange reserves remain below past peaks while U.S. spot ETFs hold about 1.3 million BTC.

On‑chain metrics show the indicators that flagged prior Bitcoin cycle peaks have not reached the same levels in the current advance. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs now hold about 1.3 million BTC, and total balances on monitored exchanges have declined, while BTC has traded above $81,000.

Glassnode data through May 14, 2026, shows the MVRV Z‑Score — a measure comparing market value to realized value — peaked near 3.5 during the post‑halving run and was close to 1 in mid‑May. Readings above 6 have historically coincided with prior cycle tops; the 2017 peak printed near 10 and the 2021 peak near 7.

Exchange reserves tracked by on‑chain analytics fell from a peak above 3.3 million BTC in early 2022 to about 3.0 million BTC in May 2026. During that period, Bitcoin cleared earlier highs and reached roughly $126,000 in October 2025. The decline in exchange float occurred as large wallet cohorts increased holdings and moved coins out of exchange custody.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, which began operating in January 2024, held roughly 1.3 million BTC in aggregate as of mid‑May 2026, equal to about 6.5% of circulating supply. BlackRock’s IBIT is the largest single fund, followed by Fidelity’s FBTC and Grayscale’s products. ETF balances grew steadily, including during periods of sideways price action, and inflows at times absorbed more BTC than daily mining issuance.

Historically observed thresholds provide reference points for market structure: a return of the MVRV Z‑Score above 3.5 and sustained moves toward 6 have preceded multi‑month corrections in past cycles, and exchange reserves rising materially above roughly 3.2 million BTC has coincided with distribution from holders who bought after 2022. Those thresholds are drawn from historical on‑chain readings.

The MVRV Z‑Score is calculated by comparing market capitalization to realized capitalization, which values coins at the price they last moved on‑chain. Exchange balance metrics measure BTC deposited on monitored trading venues. Spot ETFs use custody outside of exchange balances and have captured a growing share of newly mined and circulating supply since their introduction in 2024.
