Legend to Shut Down July 12; Founder: Hide the Blockchain

Legend, a mobile DeFi app backed by Coinbase Ventures and a16z Crypto, will close July 12. Founder Jayson Hobby said mainstream users want clear outcomes, not visible blockchains.

Legend will stop operating on July 12 after two years, the company announced. Founder Jayson Hobby framed the closure as a market lesson and wrote that mainstream users “don’t care if a product is on-chain or not. They want outcomes. Better yield, faster payments, more control over their money.” He added, “the product that wins isn’t the one that explains crypto better, it’s the one that hides it completely.”

Legend raised $15 million in a February 2025 seed round led by Andreessen Horowitz’s crypto arm with participation from Coinbase Ventures. Hobby, formerly an executive at Compound Finance and Coinbase, built an iOS app that offered one-tap access to decentralized finance yields, token swaps, borrowing and looping strategies. The app was non-custodial, so users retained control of their funds and the company did not hold a central pool of assets.

According to Hobby, the product found an audience but did not grow to a scale that justified continued spending. The company did not publish figures for active users, downloads or transaction volume. Because of its non-custodial design, Legend did not report a total value locked on the platform.

Legend will remain online until July 12. Users will receive weekly reminders to withdraw funds and product documentation will be available for 60 days after the shutdown date. The company urged users to follow the documentation for withdrawal instructions.

Legend’s closure follows other 2025 and 2026 cases in which well-funded consumer crypto apps validated user interest but did not secure broad distribution or sustainable unit economics. In his closing note, Hobby recommended that future consumer crypto products prioritize simple, familiar outcomes such as better returns or faster payments, rather than foregrounding on-chain features.
