Former Cerberus Executive Builds Ethena’s Synthetic Dollar

Guy Young left Cerberus Capital after roughly six years and founded Ethena Labs in March 2023. Ethena launched USDe, a delta-neutral synthetic dollar, in February 2024.

Young worked in traditional finance for nearly a decade and led principal investments at a Cerberus affiliate, focusing on banks, specialty finance, insurance and fintech. He exited that sector after the 2022 Terra/Luna collapse and has cited an essay by Arthur Hayes as an influence on USDe’s design.

USDe pairs spot crypto collateral with short positions in perpetual futures so the net exposure targets a dollar price rather than a directional bet on cryptocurrencies. Holders who stake USDe receive sUSDe as a receipt. Staking rewards and funding rates paid to the short side when funding is positive provide yield to stakers.

Ethena issues ENA as its governance token. The company also offers USDtb, a product backed by a money market fund intended for users seeking a more cash-like, compliance-focused option.

Ethena’s fundraising began with a July 2023 seed round of about $6.5 million. Backers included Dragonfly, Maelstrom and Deribit. An extended seed in February 2024 raised $14 million at a $300 million valuation. In February 2025 Ethena completed a $100 million strategic round with investors including Franklin Templeton and F-Prime. Public trackers list roughly $136.5 million raised across disclosed rounds.

After launch USDe supply rose to a peak above $14 billion in October 2025. By August 30, 2026, supply had fallen to about $4.07 billion, roughly 1.3% of an estimated $308 billion stablecoin market.

Ethena and partners report more than $30 billion of mint and redeem volume processed across the stack. Public coverage has also noted a $7.5 billion buyback threshold linked to StablecoinX.

On September 1, 2026, Ethena launched Ethena Pay on Avalanche, a self-custodial spending app. Early materials describe a roughly 400-user beta across 49 countries, Visa access enabled via Rain, and a U.S. banking partner. The app includes discretionary yield features described by Ethena as ways to increase spendable balances; Ethena describes the beta as an experiment rather than a finished corporate payout product.

A public-markets vehicle called StablecoinX began trading on Nasdaq in June 2026 under the ticker USDE. The listed entity holds ENA tokens rather than USDe, so the listed vehicle does not represent a direct claim on synthetic-dollar balances.

USDe exposes holders to funding-rate risk, venue risk and hedge risk that fiat-reserve stablecoins do not carry. Under current accounting standards, USDe does not meet the Financial Accounting Standards Board’s cash-equivalent on-demand issuer-redemption test and therefore is not a direct substitute for bank deposits or cash equivalents on corporate balance sheets. European regulatory history and national authorities’ positions are relevant for users in the EU.
