Ethereum liquidity rise lifts ETH/BTC bets for Q4
Ethereum on-chain liquidity has risen due to stablecoin growth and record ETH staking, lifting the ETH/BTC ratio and prompting bets ETH could overtake Bitcoin in Q4.
Ethereum on-chain liquidity has increased as stablecoin issuance and record ETH staking expand capital available on the network. The rise in liquidity has coincided with an uptick in the ETH/BTC ratio and market wagers that ETH may challenge Bitcoin in the fourth quarter.
Stablecoins denominated in euros minted on Ethereum climbed 347.3% over three years to $848.1 million. Ethereum now holds 69.4% of total stablecoin supply, more than twice the share of any other blockchain. Stablecoin balances on the Robinhood Chain passed the $1 billion mark, adding to on-chain liquidity outside major networks. Staking on Ethereum reached a record 42.95 million ETH, about $106 billion, equivalent to 35.21% of the total ETH supply held by validators.
Bitcoin’s recent price gains were not matched by similar liquidity expansion. Bitcoin closed August more than 25% higher month over month, its strongest monthly performance since November 2024, and roughly 45% above a recent low. The broader stablecoin market cap grew 0.5% and did not sustain levels above $310 billion. On-chain indicators show a neutral 90-day cumulative volume delta, suggesting limited spot buying pressure. Exchange stablecoin reserves fell as well: Binance’s stablecoin balances dropped nearly $7 billion from a cycle peak above $50 billion. Open interest in Bitcoin derivatives has risen, increasing speculative positioning ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee meeting and as $80,000 is watched as a potential resistance level.
The difference in how each network attracts liquidity helps explain movement in the ETH/BTC ratio. Staking removes a significant portion of ETH from circulation, while increased stablecoin issuance boosts on-chain purchasing power that can be used on Ethereum for decentralized finance, tokenized assets and other applications. These dynamics change available supply and demand for ETH relative to BTC. On-chain flow tracking indicates the ETH/BTC ratio could test 0.031 if current trends persist.
A continued rotation of capital into Ethereum could allow liquidity to move into tokens built on or tied to the Ethereum network, affecting broader altcoin market activity in Q4. Market participants are watching on-chain metrics, exchange reserves, derivatives positioning and upcoming macro events to see whether the recent pattern of inflows to Ethereum continues.
