Coinbase Enables AI Agents to Pay Merchants in USDC

Coinbase said all Coinbase Business customers can accept USDC from AI agents via its x402 standard, with settlement through Coinbase Payments and no extra integration required.

Coinbase announced on July 23, 2026 that all Coinbase Business customers can accept USDC payments directly from AI agents using the x402 open payment standard. Payments settle through Coinbase Payments and merchants do not need to add a separate integration to receive agent payments.

The release accompanied two other agent-focused products. Coinbase expanded Coinbase for Agents to provide real-time market data streams and plain-English conditional trading commands. The company also released a CDP x402 software development kit meant to let developers add agent payment acceptance to online services with a few lines of code. Coinbase said transactions can settle on Base or other supported chains, and merchants in eligible markets may receive 3.35% rewards on idle USDC balances held in their accounts.

Coinbase described an end-to-end agent commerce flow in which an autonomous system reads developer documentation, creates and funds a wallet, pays a merchant that accepts x402, and completes settlement in USDC. Sid Coelho-Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, said: ‘We re-architected how transactions work for a new online agentic economy. Agents, on one side of the transaction, will go and read the Coinbase developer docs, create a wallet for themselves, and are ready to shop.’

Coinbase introduced the x402 standard in May 2025. The standard repurposes the HTTP 402 Payment Required response so a server can return a machine-readable payment request when an agent hits a paywalled API or service. The agent signs a stablecoin transaction and retries the request with proof of payment attached.

Coinbase and other proponents say x402 addresses limits of card rails, which assume human checkout flows with credentials, 3-D Secure checks and chargeback rights. Stablecoins are programmable, final and divisible to fractions of a cent, properties that support high-frequency, sub-dollar purchases by software agents.

Coinbase stated merchants accepting agent payments face no chargeback risk and can enable acceptance through Coinbase Business account settings. The CDP x402 SDK includes managed wallets and spend controls to help developers integrate payments quickly.

Early x402 use has been concentrated in digital infrastructure services. Coinbase pointed to transactions for API credits, domain names and cloud storage and identified cloud providers and infrastructure vendors among early adopters. Third-party integrations have appeared: one cloud service added x402 support to its agent payments offering in May, and an x402-based marketplace launched in April to connect agents with compatible services.

Measured activity remains small. An analysis in March 2026 found the average x402 payment was about $0.20 and roughly half of examined transactions appeared gamified rather than commercial. Coinbase reported that in June agent traffic to its Base documentation pages exceeded human traffic for the first time.

Coinbase operates Coinbase Business in the United States and Singapore and said specific features and the USDC reward rate vary by market. The announcement follows the June launch of an alternative token, Open USD, backed by several payments and asset managers; Coinbase continues to support USDC while participating in the Open USD consortium.

Coinbase described the release as making agent-enabled payments an ordinary merchant feature by removing the need for custom checkouts.
