Card vs. Agent Payments: What Each Transaction Costs

A 10-cent domestic card payment costs 30.29 cents in standard fees, compared with 0.1 cent through x402. Card and stablecoin fees break even at about $21.43.

Agent payment fees can be lower than card fees for small transactions. A 10-cent domestic card payment costs 30.29 cents under standard U.S. pricing, compared with 0.1 cent when an x402 payment is settled onchain. Card and stablecoin fees reach a break-even point at about $21.43.

The comparison uses published rates from Stripe and Coinbase. Stripe charges 2.9% plus 30 cents for a successful domestic card payment. Its stablecoin payment product charges 1.5% of the transaction. Coinbase’s hosted x402 facilitator settles the first 1,000 onchain transactions each month without a fee and charges $0.001 for each additional settlement. Payment verification is free.

The fixed card charge has the greatest effect on small purchases. A 1-cent card payment generates a 30.03-cent fee, or 3,003% of the sale. At 10 cents, the fee is 30.29 cents, equal to 303% of the transaction. At $1, the fee is 32.9 cents, or 32.9%. At $50, it is $1.75, or 3.5%.

After the free monthly allowance, the x402 fee is fixed at $0.001 per settlement. That equals 1% of a 10-cent payment, 0.1% of a $1 payment and 0.02% of a $5 payment. At $50, it represents 0.0002% of the transaction. These figures cover settlement costs and exclude other operating expenses.

A 1.5% stablecoin fee amounts to 0.15 cent on a 10-cent payment, 1.5 cents on a $1 payment, 7.5 cents on a $5 payment, 75 cents on a $50 payment and $7.50 on a $500 payment. Stripe also lists a 0.8% rate for stablecoins processed through Stripe Link until the start of 2027. The rate is scheduled to increase after that period. The general stablecoin rate used in this comparison is 1.5%.

The $21.43 break-even point compares a domestic card fee of 2.9% plus 30 cents with a 1.5% stablecoin fee. Below that amount, the fixed card charge accounts for most of the difference. Above it, the comparison is mainly between the card’s 2.9% percentage fee and the stablecoin rate.

Agent payment costs can fall when payments are grouped before settlement. On EVM networks, offchain payment vouchers can be verified without charge and claimed in one onchain transaction. Spreading a $0.001 settlement fee across 1,000 payments reduces the settlement cost to $0.000001 per payment. The arrangement is not available on every network. On Solana, the comparable ceiling scheme uses two onchain transactions.

The comparison excludes dispute and reconciliation costs. Stripe lists a $15 charge when a dispute is received and another $15 fee for a manual response. Both fees are refunded if the merchant wins. On a $50 order, the two fees equal 60% of the sale. Agent payment systems do not provide a card-style chargeback process. Merchants may need additional time to match blockchain addresses with customer accounts.

International cards add 1.5 percentage points to Stripe’s standard card rate. Currency conversion adds another percentage point. The effective cost also depends on the transaction amount, the number of settlements, dispute frequency and reconciliation work. Published rates can change, while negotiated card pricing, network conditions and regional differences can produce different results.
