BitTorrent completes first BTT buyback-and-burn

BitTorrent burned 21.62 trillion BTT worth about $7.6 million on Oct. 16 using third-quarter decentralized-service revenue and released a whitepaper on Web3 and AI infrastructure.

BitTorrent completed its first BTT buyback-and-burn on Oct. 16, permanently removing 21,621,611,570,729.6 tokens from circulation. The tokens were valued at about $7.6 million and were bought with 100% of the company’s decentralized-service revenue for the third quarter of 2026.

The tokens were sent to a permanent burn address and cannot be recovered. The transaction is recorded under the hash 4d9596617780e329bbd4e644ee0dffd780ec4cf3749f324d03eb98157eb04ae5.

BitTorrent announced the quarterly buyback-and-burn program on July 6. Under the plan, revenue from decentralized services will fund BTT repurchases and burns each quarter. A dashboard on BitTorrent’s official website will publish burn totals and transaction records around the middle of the first month of each quarter. The company’s first buyback used revenue generated from July through September 2026.

BitTorrent also released a whitepaper describing a three-part network architecture for Web3 applications and artificial intelligence services. The BitTorrent Mainnet is the peer-to-peer data distribution layer, connecting users and nodes to share content.

BTTInferGrid is the proposed decentralized computing layer. It is designed to connect distributed graphics processing unit capacity with developers and decentralized applications that need resources for AI inference. The system is intended to distribute computing tasks across network participants.

BTTC provides Layer 2 scaling, cross-chain connectivity and settlement. It supports transactions involving TRON, Ethereum and BNB Chain. Its stated uses include payments, staking, rewards and node incentives. BTTC is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine and is designed to support lower-cost, higher-frequency transactions.

BTT is used for resource payments, transaction fees, staking, node rewards and governance across the architecture. The whitepaper links content distribution, computing, transaction execution and settlement through the token.

BitTorrent reported that BTT rose about 30.3% in the three months through Oct. 15. The company did not provide an independent assessment of the reasons for the price change.

BitTorrent operates within the TRON ecosystem and was originally known for its peer-to-peer file-sharing protocol. The whitepaper expands its stated focus to decentralized infrastructure for Web3 applications and AI services.
