Bitmine Could Hit 5% of Ethereum by Retaining Rewards

Bitmine could reach 5% of Ethereum within a year by keeping staking rewards instead of buying more, after reporting about 5.9 million ETH and roughly 135,000 ETH in annual rewards.

Bitmine could reach a 5% stake in Ethereum within a year by retaining most staking rewards rather than making further market purchases, according to the company’s disclosed balances and modeled rewards. The Nasdaq-listed treasury firm reported acquiring 53,501 ETH in the week through Aug. 30, bringing its disclosed holdings to about 5.9 million ETH. More than 5.06 million of those tokens were staked at a seven-day annualized yield of 2.67%.

On Sept. 1, on-chain analysis attributed an additional transfer of about 51,000 ETH to wallets linked to the firm; Bitmine has not confirmed that transfer. If that transfer represents an incremental purchase, disclosed holdings would be near 5.95 million ETH.

Using Bitmine’s benchmark of 120.7 million ETH in circulation, a 5% stake requires roughly 6.035 million tokens. Against the Aug. 30 disclosed balance, Bitmine was about 134,000 ETH short. At the reported staking yield and staked balance, the company would generate approximately 135,000 ETH in staking rewards over a year, meaning retaining nearly all one year’s rewards would push disclosed holdings above 5% under the flat-supply assumption. Including the reported Sept. 1 transfer reduces the shortfall to about 83,000 ETH, so retaining about 61% of a year’s rewards would close the gap under the same assumptions.

An increase in circulating ETH raises the threshold Bitmine must hold to reach 5%. A blockchain explorer showed roughly 122.02 million ETH outstanding on Sept. 5; using that larger supply, the company’s Aug. 30 holdings would represent about 4.84%, widening the shortfall to nearly 200,000 ETH.

Modeling over a two-year horizon shows supply changes materially affect required reward retention. Using the company’s disclosed staking yield and balances, the share of annual staking rewards Bitmine would need to retain to reach 5% after two years is roughly 51.4% if supply falls 0.5% annually, about 73.9% at flat supply, about 96.5% at 0.5% annual supply growth, and more than 119% at 1% annual growth (not achievable with rewards alone under those assumptions). A lower staking yield would reduce annual modeled rewards to about 101,000 ETH at a 2% yield, raising the flat-supply two-year retention requirement to nearly 99%.

Bitmine has disclosed that it converts some staking rewards into U.S. dollars and has not committed to a fixed retention rate. The company’s management agreement with Ethereum Tower includes reward-linked compensation and covers infrastructure and custody costs. Bitmine has declared 17 cash dividends on its BMNP preferred stock, with payments scheduled through late December. In regulatory filings the company cautioned that swings in ETH prices and staking yields could affect its ability to fund operations and preferred dividends, which may require selling tokens that could otherwise be retained.

The relevant metrics for tracking the company’s progress are its disclosed ETH purchases and the portion of staking rewards it retains.
