Bitcoin slips below $85K as U.S. inflation data loom

Bitcoin fell to $82,563, slipping below Glassnode’s $84,000–$85,000 long-term holder cluster as traders await U.S. PCE, ISM and payroll reports.

Bitcoin fell to an intraday low of $82,563 on Sept. 28, moving below a long-term holder purchase cluster at $84,000–$85,000 identified by on-chain analytics firm Glassnode. Traders are awaiting three U.S. economic releases: the August personal consumption expenditures report on Sept. 30, the September ISM manufacturing survey on Oct. 1, and the September employment report on Oct. 2.

Glassnode mapped a concentration of long-term holder cost basis at $84,000–$85,000 and cited a True Market Mean near $77,000 and an overhead MVRV mean near $96,700. The firm reported recent net spot buying and rising volume, alongside weekly spot ETF outflows and elevated futures leverage.

The PCE report on Sept. 30 covers August data and does not capture later September developments. The ISM manufacturing survey and the Oct. 2 payrolls report will provide earlier readings on September fuel, freight and factory costs as well as hiring and wages.

Energy data referenced by market participants show Brent spot crude averaged about $91 per barrel in August, roughly $7 higher than July, according to U.S. Energy Information Administration estimates. The International Energy Agency reported constrained Gulf diesel and gasoil exports in August and a rise in a physical crude benchmark by Sept. 9. The International Maritime Organization recorded vessel damage in and near the Strait of Hormuz on Sept. 21 and 23.

ISM’s August Prices Index was 71.1 and Supplier Deliveries 59.3, with respondents noting higher diesel and freight costs and discussing energy and regional conflicts. The Sept. 29 JOLTS release provided an early check on August labor market openings ahead of the Oct. 2 payrolls report. The Federal Reserve raised its target range to 3.75%–4% on Sept. 16.

Bitcoin traded in the low $83,000s around Sept. 28–29, with a market capitalization near $1.68 trillion and 24-hour volume around $34 billion. Market participants are watching the sequence of data releases and on-chain holder cost bands to assess how spot demand and rate expectations evolve.
