Bitcoin must hold $62,500 as altcoins lose $8.8B
Bitcoin traded near $62,500–$64,300 into the weekend as altcoin market cap fell about $8.8 billion from July 10 to July 17.
Bitcoin traded between roughly $62,500 and $64,300 as the weekend began, with $62,500 cited by traders as the immediate level to defend after a week of losses in smaller tokens.
Altcoin market capitalization fell to $976.3 billion on July 16 and recovered to $983.8 billion by July 17, leaving it $8.8 billion below the $992.6 billion recorded on July 10. Altcoin dominance moved from 21.76% on July 10 down to 20.55% on July 16, then back up to 21.40% on July 17. The token HYPE, which led a recent altcoin advance, dropped more than 10% during sessions that pushed Bitcoin below $63,000; HYPE reached an all-time high near $77 on June 16.
Lacie Zhang, a research analyst at Bitget Wallet, described the pattern as a positioning and macro shock and added that “Markets treat Bitcoin as the cleanest institutional collateral asset,” while Ethereum carries more exposure to decentralized finance borrowing and altcoin liquidity.
The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell nearly 24% from its late-June peak after weaker-than-expected guidance from Samsung and SK Hynix, removing more than $2 trillion in semiconductor market value. Bitcoin and other crypto assets declined alongside the chip-stock selloff, with Ethereum falling further and HYPE falling the most during the same sessions.
US-traded spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $79.1 million in inflows on July 16, the third inflow day following a $424.7 million outflow on July 13. Ethereum ETFs posted roughly $28 million in net outflows on July 16, one day after a $53.9 million inflow. Exchange-traded flows showed a divergence between Bitcoin and Ethereum funds over several sessions.
Traders are monitoring perpetual futures open interest, funding rates, liquidation data and exchange balances of Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins to assess market conditions over the weekend. Indexed weekly performance from July 10 to 17 showed Bitcoin at 96.6, Ethereum at 93.0 and HYPE at 88.7.
Market participants will watch whether Bitcoin holds the $62,500 level while readings on ETH/BTC and altcoin dominance change, and whether ETF flows and derivatives data show further rotation into Bitcoin and stablecoins or renewed participation in a wider set of altcoins.
