Bitcoin ETF inflows fall 76% on Sept. 4; only BlackRock, Fidelity positive
Bitcoin ETF inflows fell 76% on Sept. 4 before the Labor Day holiday; BlackRock’s IBIT drew $117.4m and Fidelity’s FBTC $57.2m in net new money.
Bitcoin exchange-traded fund inflows fell 76.1% on Sept. 4, the last U.S. exchange session before the Labor Day holiday, dropping to $174.6 million from $730.8 million the previous trading day, according to a daily table of ETF flows.
BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) recorded $117.4 million in net creations and Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC) recorded $57.2 million, the only positive entries among 12 U.S.-listed products tracked that day. Ten other funds showed zero net flows and none reported net outflows.
On Sept. 3 seven funds had net positive flows: IBIT, FBTC, BITB, ARKB, MSBT, GBTC and BTC. By Sept. 4 those five funds outside BlackRock and Fidelity moved to zero net flows, reducing the aggregate total from the previous session.
A zero net-flow reading does not mean shares were not traded during the session. Investors can buy and sell ETF shares on exchanges without creating or redeeming shares at the fund level. The net-flow table records creations and redemptions made by authorized participants, not secondary market trading.
U.S. equity markets were closed Monday, Sept. 7 for Labor Day, so Sept. 4 remained the most recent completed session until exchanges reopened on Sept. 8. Global bitcoin trading continued through the holiday, but ETF trading was limited to stock-market hours, compressing the window for exchange-traded flows.
The Sept. 4 figures do not identify the types of investors behind the flows or link the decline to specific price moves or economic data. The next trading session will show whether inflows broaden beyond the two largest products.
