Bitcoin Dips Below $84K as $143M in Futures Liquidated
Bitcoin fell below $84,000 on Oct. 7 after $143 million in futures positions were liquidated. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs had $118.8 million in net inflows the previous day.
About $143.02 million in Bitcoin futures positions were liquidated over the 24 hours to 06:53 UTC on Oct. 7. Bitcoin reached a low of $83,647 and traded near $84,288 during European hours, down 1.25% over 24 hours at that time.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $118.8 million in net inflows on Oct. 6, following net outflows on Oct. 5. The daily figure covers completed fund activity and does not show when ETF purchases occurred or the prices paid.
ETF inflows and forced futures closures can occur during the same period. Subtracting the two figures would not measure net buying or selling because they track different transactions.
Futures liquidations occur when traders fail to meet margin requirements after prices move against their positions. Exchanges use a mark price to calculate liquidation levels. The threshold also depends on whether a trader uses isolated or cross margin.
ETF shares are created or redeemed through authorized participants using cash or Bitcoin. Daily fund-flow data does not identify the timing of each underlying purchase.
The liquidation total does not show how much futures exposure remains. Comparing open interest before and after the liquidations would be needed to estimate how much exposure was removed. Directional spot-trading data from the same period would help measure whether selling pressure increased or eased.
