Binance SOXL Perpetual Fell 5.9% Despite 3% Price Band

Binance’s SOXL perpetual fell 5.9% from its opening mark to an intrahour low on Oct. 17, while the mark stayed within 3% of a moving index that fell 3.9%.

Binance’s SOXLUSDT perpetual fell 5.9% from its opening mark to an intrahour low during the 21:00–22:00 UTC hour on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026. The contract’s mark remained within 3% of its reference index in all 60 matched minute-close observations.

The mark opened at 93.79 USDT at 21:00 UTC and reached 88.24 USDT during the 21:41 minute, a 5.9151% decline. It ended the hour at 90 USDT, down 4.0409% from the opening mark.

The corresponding index fell from 93.9544 USDT at the opening to 90.2232 USDT at the final minute close, a 3.9713% decline. The mark was below the index at every matched minute close. The difference ranged from about 0.00284% to 2.9%.

The two calculations use different reference points. The mark-to-index percentage compares the two prices at the same time. The opening-to-low percentage compares the mark with its earlier opening level. A falling index can therefore pull down both the index and the mark while the distance between them remains below 3%.

Binance’s detailed TradFi FAQ describes a 3% weekend and holiday limit on the distance between the mark and index for equity-based perpetuals. It also says the exchange can change deviation limits during extreme market conditions.

Binance’s published clearing procedures describe an orderbook-based reference for periods when the underlying market is closed. The reference uses impact bid and impact ask prices and applies an exponentially weighted moving average. Lower orderbook inputs can lower the smoothed index, which can lower the level around which the mark is constrained.

The detailed FAQ says Binance replaced a fixed off-hours mode for equity perpetuals with a moving index during weekends, holidays and maintenance periods on May 16, 2026, at 00:00 UTC. A separate Binance educational page still describes the index outside trading hours as fixed. The SOXL specifications place contract rules and related notices ahead of general guidance. The exact historical settings for Oct. 17, including smoothing parameters, have not been established.

The 3% band is separate from a position’s liquidation threshold. Liquidation depends on the mark reaching an account-specific level determined by factors such as cross or isolated margin, leverage and maintenance-margin requirements. Binance’s clearing procedures allow margin requirements and leverage tiers to change, including for existing positions.

SOXL targets three times the daily performance of the NYSE Semiconductor Index before fees and expenses. That daily reset is separate from the leverage selected by a trader on Binance’s perpetual contract. The contract provides derivative exposure to SOXL rather than ownership of shares traded on NYSE Arca.
