Aave Base hub exposes USDC lenders to weekend price gap
Aave’s Base Equities Hub began accepting seven Coinbase stock tokens as collateral on Sept. 25 with a $21M USDC draw cap; Chainlink feeds hold Friday prices through Sunday.
Aave Labs activated its V4 Equities Hub on the Base network on Sept. 25, allowing seven Coinbase-issued stock tokens to be posted as collateral for USDC loans. The hub carries a $21 million draw cap on borrowing and a separate $32 million add cap on USDC supply. The caps limit how much USDC can be borrowed or supplied but do not report current deposits or outstanding loans.
The eligible collateral tokens are AAPLc, AMZNc, GOOGLc, METAc, MSFTc, NVDAc and TSLAc. Borrowers may post only those stock tokens as collateral and may draw USDC from the dedicated spoke. Price data for the tokens is delivered through Chainlink equity-linked feeds that combine the underlying share price with a Coinbase issuer multiplier.
LlamaRisk, which recommended the hub’s initial parameters, described the feeds as publishing new values from Sunday 8 p.m. to Friday 8 p.m. Eastern and holding the last published value from Friday evening until Sunday evening, as well as on U.S. market holidays. The Aave market remains open for deposits, borrowing and liquidations during the feed freeze, while onchain token trading can continue.
Because on-protocol collateral health calculations use the frozen feed value over weekends, a token’s off-chain price can change without being reflected in Aave until the feed resumes. Interest on outstanding USDC loans continues to accrue during the closure. If a large reopening price gap appears and seized tokens cannot be sold or hedged at assumed levels, the hub could record bad debt that would be borne by USDC suppliers who opted into the equity-backed spoke.
Collateral factors for the seven tokens are set between 65% and 79% in Aave V4; those factors determine both borrowing limits and liquidation thresholds. LlamaRisk’s parameter recommendation applies a stress method based on historical off-hours moves, allows a 0.5% gap between oracle value and the market, uses the top 24% annual USDC borrow rate across the longest closure, and assumes liquidation can be completed no later than five minutes after the next regular stock-market open. The maximum configured liquidation bonus is 5.5% to compensate liquidators for selling, redeeming or hedging seized tokens.
How seized tokens are closed affects who ultimately bears any loss. LlamaRisk’s assessment notes acquirers on a secondary market initially hold unvested positions and cannot redeem until completing an issuer-controlled vesting process. A liquidator without redemption status may sell on Base, seek a counterparty eligible for redemption, or use hedges while waiting to close exposure. A snapshot of market depth from Sept. 17 estimated sale depth per token at about $270,000 to $1.08 million for a 2% price impact; larger disposals may need to be split or routed to parties with redemption access.
The activation followed a governance route in which a Snapshot vote was treated as binding and the Protocol Security Council unhalted the deployed market directly without an AIP or a vote in Aave Governance V3; Aave Labs later confirmed the council acted. A separate risk-steward configuration remained subject to a formal AIP. The $21 million draw cap limits maximum potential borrowing, while actual exposure depends on outstanding loans, position sizes, collateral valuations and the liquidity available when the feeds update. LlamaRisk noted that its models are based on historical records and do not guarantee protection against declines larger or rarer than those in the dataset.
