Tether Files Trademarks in South Korea Including KRWT

Tether filed seven trademark applications in South Korea’s KIPRIS, including KRWT and WONTETHER under Class 09; the company has not commented.
Tether submitted seven trademark applications to the Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service (KIPRIS). The filings appear in the KIPRIS database and list multiple marks registered under international Class 9.
The applications include KRWT and WONTETHER, along with Tether Gold (XAUT), QVAC, USDT0, USAT and the company’s shield logo. All of those marks are filed under Class 9, which covers software and digital products, including crypto-related tokens and related services. A separate application for PROOF OF STEAK is filed under Class 43, the classification for food service and hospitality.
KRWT uses the standard currency code KRW for the South Korean won; WONTETHER combines a reference to the won with the Tether brand. The filings themselves do not establish a product or token.
South Korea is preparing a Digital Asset Basic Act, a proposed law that would require foreign stablecoin issuers to set up a local branch before selling tokens to domestic users. The timing of the trademark filings coincides with that regulatory process.
A consortium of major South Korean banks is developing a won‑pegged stablecoin. Circle and several domestic fintech firms have announced work on local stablecoin designs.
Tether has not issued a public statement confirming a product launch, a partner, or engagement with Korean regulators related to the trademarks. Tether currently accounts for a large share of stablecoin activity among South Korean users.
