Tether MiCA Delist Spurs $3B USDT Outflow

Major exchanges removed USDT for EU users after Tether declined MiCA approval, coinciding with about $3 billion in USDT outflows and a roughly $6 billion drop in stablecoin supply.
Major exchanges removed Tether’s USDT for European users after the issuer chose not to seek approval under the EU Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. The changes coincided with roughly $3 billion of USDT leaving exchanges.
Binance, Coinbase and Kraken stopped offering USDT to customers in the European Union after Tether declined to apply for MiCA authorization. The delistings took effect in recent weeks for accounts that must comply with EU rules.
USDT’s market capitalization fell from near $190 billion earlier in Q2 to about $185 billion amid the outflows. Total stablecoin supply, which topped more than $321 billion in early May, has declined by over $6 billion since that peak.
MiCA requires stablecoin issuers and some listed tokens to meet regulatory standards to be available to EU customers. Removing USDT from EU listings reduced a common fiat on-ramp for users who access crypto through centralized exchanges.
On-chain and exchange flow data show lower USDT balances and increased activity in stablecoins viewed as compliant with MiCA. Over the past month USD Coin (USDC) has fallen roughly 2.5%, while RLUSD has increased about 6.5%.
Exchanges and custody providers have adjusted listings and custody practices to align with MiCA requirements. Those changes have altered how European customers can move fiat into crypto and have tightened available stablecoin liquidity for trading and decentralized finance activity in the region.
The USDT outflows occurred as broader market sentiment improved after easing geopolitical tensions, a period when traders often raise exposure and leverage. Market data indicate stablecoin liquidity affects trading depth and margin availability across platforms.
Exchanges, issuers and liquidity providers continue to modify services and flows as they respond to the MiCA framework and to user demand.
